Water & Health and Sanitation

Out of 7,541,641 total population, (Ref. midterm Census 2022) 55% of the total population are living in rural communities, in poor and deplorable housing conditions across the country of Sierra Leone.. This includes lack of toilet facilities, and pure drinking water health facilities.Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. Absent, inadequate, or inappropriately managed water and sanitation services expose individuals to preventable health risks. - World Health Organization

Mokonde community water source for drinking cooking etc.

In 2010, the UN General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation. Everyone has the right to sufficient, continuous, safe, acceptable, physically accessible, and affordable water for personal and domestic use

SAFS generally operates in marginalized and deprived rural communities across the 3 districts of Sierra Leone, and all of these communities are prone to health hazards.

Currently SAFS is serving 4,500 farmers in these communities. Whose families face constraints/challenges with pure drinking water and toilet facilities. The only source of drinking water is from swamp streams, in which the people use this same body of water to conduct all domestic activities i.e. to drink, to wash laundry, for defecating, cooking, and farming. It’s causing a great deal of health issues, especially in children.

Some have water wells but are no more functional because these communities cannot afford to repair them. This is affecting children attending schools because they have to walk sometimes, half a mile or a mile to get drinking and cooking water from the streams. This is affecting female children because they have to walk through the forest to fetch water where they are vulnerable to rape and snake bites. .

The constraints and challenges describe the poor socio-economic status of the people of these communities, especially women.
